A Visit to Lindenwold's PreSchool

I've been talking a lot about getting into books into the hands of little ones, and encouraging parents to read consistently with their kids.  Yesterday, after over a month of not really giving books away, I had my chance at Lindenwold's Preschool!  Colleen Moran, the principal, invited me to family movie night last night and I set up shop. Dozens of families attended with their kids, and each child left with an armful of books, which goes into my vision of every child in Lindenwold having a library of their own!

And get this - I had the pleasure of seeing some of my old students with their kids! It had been about ten years since I last saw Brenda Coleman, Jessie Nemeth, and Desiree Medina. It occurred to me on the way home that their children could be in one of my freshman classes just before I retire!   This makes me feel old, but I like being part of that circle of life!

One bittersweet feeling hit me pretty hard.  As I was sorting and arranging the books, one of my daughter's favorites, Goodnight Moon, popped out of a stack.  She is now in college, and I remember how this was one of her favorites.  She could clearly recite it when she was barely two.  Reading with my daughter, especially before bedtime, is one of my favorite memories. It would be nice to go back to those days of being a young dad, but we have to move on.  At least I can live vicariously through the parents sharing and reading with their kids.

Instead of waiting for another opportunity to give out books at an actual function, I'm thinking doing my own thing.  What do you think of me loading great books into a wagon or cart, and intercepting School 4 kids heading back to the apartments with their parents?

Is this crazy or will it work? What do you think?  Do you have other ideas?
