Dan McVay, a talented and compassionate supervisor for Philadelphia Department of Human Services, thought it would be a great idea to start putting children's books into the hands of Philadelphia toddlers and kids experiencing trauma, poverty, and abuse. BookSmiles will feed his organization tens of thousands of books over the years.
Here he is, about to load his van with 875 sorted books! Below, you will see his staff members assembling a library that we will keep restocked. BAM!

Wow! What a wonderful idea; books have the stories that fuel the soul for that continued life work of searching for who you are, what you want, and just a distraction from a difficult time.

Thank you for sharing this important post about BookSmiles and its partnership with the Philadelphia Department of Human Services. What a meaningful step toward bringing books and hope to children in need. As someone who’s had cerebral palsy since six months old and was once told I might never walk, I deeply believe in the power of stories, of being seen, heard, and given a chance to dream beyond present struggles. Your work reminds me that when we share compassion and opportunity, we plant seeds of hope for the future.
